This University was established as University of Islamabad under an Act of National Assembly passed in July, 1967. It started teaching and research program for M.Phil & Ph.D. degrees. Later on, it was decided to start M.Sc. degree program for graduates from all regions of the country, based on regional quota. Pakistan Institute of Engineering and Applied Sciences (PIEAS) has been ranked 115 in the top 250 Asian Universities in the Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) ranking of 2015. QS, working since 1990, is an established authority on global provider of specialist higher education and careers information and solutions. Earlier in 2014, PIEAS, competing for the first time in the QS Asian Rankings 2014, scored highest points amongst all the Pakistani universities participating in the ranking.
